Houston

Here is the view of Houston from outside my new office. There is a nice cube farm starting to grow right outside my door. And as I look outside my window, I can see the old Enron Building. Did I ever tell you that I met Ken Lay and had dinner with him one time? It is true...

I was not aware of this Ken Lay story. Another interesting Dad nugget. ~ Meg

I can picture it in my mind... you and Ken Lay drinking a bottle of hoity toity French 1945 Chateau Rothschild Bordeaux with the main course, then finishing the meal off with fresh roasted, hand ground double frappuccino mocha latte (with a texture and taste similar to a cheap oil based paint) served in a Turkish coffe cup and with your pinky finger sticking straight out.

Here I am, defending my honour again. Excuse me, that is HONOR, I didn't mean to use a fancy European spelling, it just came out. It happens, we were having dinner down in Corpus Christi and it was when I was President of the local Gas Processors of America chapter around 1988 or so. Every few months, we invited some big shot down to address our humble organization.

Now they didn't have wine and fancy espresso coffee down in South Texas back then. Probably still don't. The dinner would have been at a hotel and there would have been your choice of dried up beef or rubber chicken with cold mashed potatoes followed by the traditional brewed Folgers and Key Lime Pie made from real reconstitued lime juice with a graham cracker crust. We would have thought such a meal better than taking a big shot to one of the local Mexican restaurants or going to one the fried seafood joints (either one of which would have been better in reality).

I have no recollection of what he said when he gave his talk. What I do remember is that he knew the name and something personal about every one of the Enron employees that was there. I asked the local manager how that was and he said whenever Ken came you had to send him a summary of employees who would be there with a picture. He reviewed it beforehand and said something personal to every employee there. I was impressed, and to some degree still am. I guess you can't judge a book by the cover though, be the cover good or bad.

Well, that is enough of that. I think I'll go fix myself a machiatto and have a biscotti.

I also didn't know that you were president of a professional organization. And now you're the overlord of a cube serfdom. So. Important. ~mam
